19th  February

Today we are going to the Justice for Hillsborough campaign in Ansfield to get an interview with chairman Steve Kelly. We also want to get shots of the memorial at the Liverpool Football grounds and some footage of the Justice for Hillsborough headquarters. Ill hopefully post some pictures after our day of filming.

Liverpool Residential

18th,February

Today we arrived in Liverpool. First we decided to have a group meeting to discuss the itinerary for over the next three days. Today we have decided to go to the center of Liverpool and film some establishing shots. We also want to get some vox pops of people who may have been at Hillsborough but also Liverpools thoughts and opinions on the disaster.

Evidence of production diary

As part of research for our documentary I decided to watch Channel 5s 'The truth about Hillsborough'. This gave me a huge amount information as well as interest and drive. Now I know more about Hillsborough I feel that I really want to make a documentary worthy for anyone involved in the ordeal. It also got me thinking about the structure of our documentary and what approach we wanted.

We later had a group meeting to discuss the structure of the documentary and came up with a basic plan:
  • Introduction of disaster (to inform ad educate)
  • Shots of Liverpool city, stadium and memorial
  • Interview with Hillsborough for Justice campaign (main chunk)
  • Memorial shots (emotive)

Justice for the 96

We have had various group meetings to discuss what the topic for our documentary will be and after much thought we have decided we want it to be on the topic of the Hillsborough disaster.

A brief summary of The Hillsborough disaster
On the 15th of April 1989 during the FA cup semi-final between Nottingham Forrest and Liverpool FC 96 were crushed due to the polices lack of crowd control and organisation. 766 were injured and mentally scarred for life. What made the event more disgusting was that the Liverpool football fans were blamed for the deaths of the 96, branded as filth, thieves and murderers by national newspaper tabloid 'The Sun'.

We decided we wanted our documentary to be based around the 'Justice for Hillsborough campaign'. We aim to get interviews with the chair man of the organisation and also residents of Liverpool city.

Film Art

I read pages 338-355 of book Film Art, I feel this really helped broaden my understanding of documentary film making. The extract discussed the different styles and forms of documentaries. I learnt there are several different approaches to documentary film making such as; Observational, Direct Cinema, Educational/ informative, Poetic, Investigative and Collage.
Film Art
Our documentary will take the Collage approach using archive footage and stills.

Analysing exsisting material.

I looked at  Exit through the gift shop, which is a film documentary directed by well-known street artist Bansky. It was nominated at the 83rd Oscars for ‘Best Documentary Feature’. The film is said to be a prank or ‘mockumentary’ but when questioned on the latter Banksy insists the film is not a prank and 100% real. The approach to this documentary is a mixture of education/informative and collage. The film revolves solely around the subject of street art and there are multiple contributors in film. Archive footage is also used throughout the film, particularly in the opening montage where we see archival footage from existing street art films.
The film shows LA based French immigrant Thierry Guetta’s obsession with street art and documentation of his own life via filming.
